Brittany is a region rich in diversity. It is a fascinating mix of spectacular coastline, ancient towns, amazing islands and beautiful forests. It is steeped in culture and tradition and gorgeous natural beauty, including the Pink Granite Coast, Belle and Carnac. And one of the best ways to experience Brittany is travelling by ferry!
Ferries are an excellent way to travel to Brittany. They can take you closer to many popular holiday destinations, saving kilometres of driving, fuel costs, tolls and overnight stops. This way you can enjoy more of your valuable holiday time.
Brittany Ferries is one of the biggest ferry carriers to and from Brittany. There is a range of different ferries, including the Classic Cruise ferries and High Speed ferry services. Each of them sail from Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth to Cherbourg, Caen, Roscoff, St Malo in France and to Santander in northern Spain. You can choose to cruise across by day or overnight, or take one of the high speed services arriving in France in as little as 135 minutes.
To get an idea of ticket prices: between Portsmouth and Caen, tickets start from £57; Poole to Cherbourg is from £57; and between Plymouth and Roscoff, prices start from £69.
Over half of the island is officially designated as an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. It was home to the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, and Queen Victoria built her much loved summer residence and final home here. Tourism is its major industry, with thousands of local and international tourists visiting each year. What are we talking about? The Isle of Wight! And the best way to travel to this spectacular place is by ferry!
Wightlink is one of the biggest ferry services to the Isle of Wight. Every year they carry 5.5 million passengers, 1.2 million cars and 200,000 coaches across the Solent. All three ferry routes sail every half hour during peak times. The FastCat catamarans cross in around 18 minutes and the car ferries take around 40 minutes.
The routes include Fishbourne and Portsmouth, Lymington and Yarmouth and Portsmouth Harbour and Ryde.
But these ferries aren’t just to get from A to B. Onboard there are loads of things to entertain you, including spacious lounges, comfortable seats, café areas as well as large observation decks with beautiful views of the Solent!
Ticket prices vary depending on whether you are travelling with a vehicle, whether you buy a seasonal pass or a book of standard tickets. Call Wightlink to find out more details!
Brittany, our closest neighbour from Continental Europe is a short ferry ride away. A firm favourite holiday destination for us Brits, we flock there all year round though particularly during the summer where there is a slightly increased chance of catching some summer sun.
None of the crossing routes are terribly long, making Brittany the perfect retreat for families. The Brittany Ferries line runs several routes from Portsmouth to Caen, St Malo and Cherbourg, Poole to Cherbourg, Plymouth to Roscoff and Cork to Roscoff. The best price that they are currently offering is £251 for a return trip for two adults including car from Portsmouth to Caen in September. Take a look at the Brittany Ferries website for more information.
P&O also sail to Brittany and currently have a special deal offering a free Disneyland Paris ticket for every Dover to Calais ferry ticket bought before 15th November 2009 for travel before 1st April 2010. Since they are offering Dover to Calais return tickets from just £30 this seems like a deal too good to be missed.
