Flights into Mumbai the Gateway to India
Mumbai, or Bombay as it used to be known, has become an extremely popular destination for tourists who are looking to start off their Indian travels. Mumbai's airport Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is the busiest airport in India and the main international gate of entry into the country. Many international carriers now fly into Mumbai. The best carriers for direct flights from the UK are Air India, British Airwaysand Jet Airways. The airport itself is 28 kilometres from the city centre and the best bet is to take a taxi into the centre. Be sure to agree your taxi price beforehand as it is not uncommon for taxis to take advantage of unsuspecting tourists. Going into Mumbai itself can be a little overwhelming given its size and atmosphere. Tourists should not miss the fabulous city in the walls of Fort St. George. If you’re interested in museums, the Kala Ghoda area in South Mumbai is the place to go, and worth a special visit is the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Prince of Wales Museum. For those wishing to see the real Mumbai, there are organised tours of the slum areas. These tours can be pre-arranged and provide a valuable insight into the poorer parts of the city’s life.
