Looking for holiday accommodation that is as cheap as chips? Stay in a hostel and save your pennies
The Youth Hostel Association, already a stalwart of the British Holiday provided just that type of accommodation. By guaranteeing decent living conditions, an onsite warden or caretaker and lockable single sex dormitories, parents were more than happy for their little darlings to stay in such establishments. Now a huge industry, other hostelling bodies have sprung up such as Backpacker hostels and Hostelling International. With a large network of hostels across different countries, travellers can plot their route knowing that they have accommodation sorted and knowing what kind of standard to expect. Generally there are a variety of rooms to select from either sharing with just one other or in a dormitory which sleeps up to twelve people. There are also family rooms for those travelling with their nearest and dearest. Hostels have shower blocks, although some of the rooms also have en suite bathrooms. You should expect to have a communal lounge and television area, a shared kitchen and possibly a games room. In some warmer countries such as Australia, it is very common for hostels to also have a swimming pool. Many airlines also have deals with hostelling associations allowing travellers to stay at discounted rates per night. They guarantee lockable lockers, sleeping accommodation, kitchen facilities and shower block. They are also not restricted to the countryside as some people may believe but are often situated in city centres , close to transport links and to sightseeing attractions. To find out more, contact the YHA or Hostelling International. Pack your rucksack, dig out your passport and head for the hills.
