Just twenty one miles in length and up to twenty three miles in width, Barbados is an island in the Lesser Antilles. It is situated in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean and east of the Windward Islands and Caribbean Sea.

Barbados was formerly a Portuguese and then British colony and now has claimed its independence but retains Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. It is one of the Caribbean's leading tourist destinations and is the most developed island in the region.
