With eleven other lakes and over 3,500 km of public rights of way to explore, you will never be at a loss for something to do in the Lake District. Many of the small towns have plenty of visitor attractions and even the tiniest village is bound to have a pub where you can take the weight of your rucksack off your shoulders when you stop for some pub grub and a pint.

Two hotels that really leap out to us are the Gilpin Lodge and the Castle Green Hotel. The Gilpin Lodge Hotel has been named “Small Hotel of the Year 2009” and was awarded three AA rosettes for its food and is situated right on the banks of Lake Windermere.

The Castle Green Hotel has been named as “Large Hotel of the Year 2009”. Set in fourteen acres of tranquil woodland it is just ten miles from Windermere and boasts a spa and treatment centre where you can unwind and relax.
